The two South American entries vying for core status on the HSBC Sevens Series are still in the hunt after Day One in Hong Kong. Uruguay have clinched their spot in the Quarter Finals and look likely to be joined by Chile with one round left in the pool stage.
Los Teros have used their speed and handling skills to great effect, earning one-sided victories over Jamaica and the Cook Islands. Tomás Etcheverry leads the way with three tries in the two games. Uruguay’s toughest test will come at 9:22pm Eastern against Ireland who have produced near identical results in Pool G.
Meanwhile the Cóndores floundered in their opening match, losing by 14-10 to Uganda in a game they should have won. A number of mistakes led to the defeat that saw them playing well below their best. They redeemed themselves against Japan, however, upsetting the pre-tournament favorites 19-10 to save the spot in the race to the Quarter Finals. They will play Georgia at 9:44 Eastern with victory the only option for Chile.
Jamaica were also competing but their inexperienced showed as they were outstretched by both Uruguay and Ireland. Sam Caven’s try against the Teros in the opening fixture was their only score of the day. The Crocs will now face the Cook Islands in a match that will be for pride as neither team is in contention for a Quarter Final spot.
