Psalm Wooching is officially a professional rugby player. The former Washington Huskies linebacker has signed a one-year deal with Italian club Viadana. He will join the team ahead of the 2018-19 Eccellenza season in June. Viadana are currently 6th on the table in the 2017-18 season.
It’s been a rapid rise through the ranks for Wooching. The 24-year-old made headlines in February of last year declaring that he would forego a shot at a potential NFL career to pursue his passion. He returned to rugby with the Seattle Saracens and earned a trial at Aviva Premiership club Harlequins in May.
In September he made a positional switch from wing to flanker and was included in the USA Select XV side for the Americas Pacific Challenge. Wooching graduated to full senior test honors in the Americas Rugby Championship, making his debut in the No6 shirt against Chile and winning two further caps.
Viadana compete in the Eccellenza, Italy’s highest domestic competition. In 2010 their senior professional side effectively became Aironi and competed in the Celtic League (now Guinness Pro 14). When Aironi folded two years later Viadana restored its senior team to full professional status and competed in the 2013-14 European Challenge Cup.
