The Rugby Sevens pools for the 2018 Commonwealth Games have been officially unveiled. Set to kick off on April 13 of this year, the three-day tournament takes place at the Robina Stadium on Australia’s Gold Coast and features 16 men’s and 8 women’s teams. The Americas will be represented by three times, two in the men’s bracket and one in the women’s.
Canada’s men won the Bowl Competition as the 9th best team at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in South Africa. They have competed in each of the five previous Men’s Rugby Sevens events beginning in 1998 and have never advanced beyond the Gold Quarter Finals. Canada have been drawn in Pool C along with Kenya, Zambia, and four-time Commonwealth Gold champions New Zealand.
Jamaica will be the second men’s side from the Americas at the Games. This will be the first time they have participated. Both Trinidad & Tobago and Barbados were part of the 2014 edition. The Crocs have been drawn in Pool B with three HSBC Sevens Series regulars in England, Samoa, and hosts Australia.
This will be the first time that the women have participated in Rugby Sevens at the Commonwealth Games. Canada will be the sole Americas representative of the eight participating teams. They have been drawn in Pool A with New Zealand, South Africa, and Kenya.
