Uruguay and Chile have qualified for the Rugby Sevens World Cup. The two South Americans countries earned places in San Francisco 2018 today through their performances at the Viña del Mar 7’s in Chile.
Uruguay’s 14-7 victory over Brazil in the Cup Quarter Finals was enough for Los Teros 7’s to seal a place in the Rugby Sevens World Cup. It also enabled Chile to obtain the remaining vacancy.
Uruguay and Chile join Argentina to give South America three participants. North America has as many with Canada, Jamaica and the USA all to be involved. In total there are to be twenty-four countries competing.
In addition to sealing places in San Francisco, both Uruguay and Chile have also qualified for the Hong Kong Sevens. The 2019 edition will take place on April 6-8. By virtue of finishing highest in the qualifying Uruguay have also qualified for both the Vancouver 7’s and Las Vegas 7’s tournaments.
The previous edition of the Rugby Sevens World Cup was in Moscow, Russia in 2013. Argentina, Canada, Uruguay and the USA were all involved. The best performer from the Americas was Canada who won the Plate Final, defeating Samoa 19-12.
The Cup Final was won by New Zealand. They completed an outstanding 33-0 win over England to win the 2013 Rugby Sevens World Cup. Four years earlier Dubai hosted the Rugby Sevens World Cup. On that occasion Argentina financed runners-up, defeated 19-12 by Champions Wales in the final.
