USA fans have been given an early Christmas present with the news that Gary Gold has been granted an early release by Worcester Warriors and will now begin his role with the Eagles in January ahead of the Americas Rugby Championship.
The South African, hired in October to replace outgoing coach John Mitchell, had not been due to arrive on US soil until the end of the Aviva Premiership season in June but the Warriors have moved quickly to appoint another South African – Alan Solomons – as their new Director of Rugby, allowing Gold to leave immediately.
It’s a boost to the Eagles, who were guided by former All Blacks prop Dave Hewett in an interim capacity for the June tests. The USA have already qualified for the 2019 World Cup but the early arrival gives Gold an extra six months to get acquainted to his new surroundings and see first-hand the talent at his disposal during the ARC. Hewett will now return to New Zealand to take up a position as Head Coach of the Southland Stags in the Mitre 10 Cup.
Gold leaves the Warriors in decent shape considering their off-field struggles, with a change of ownership seemingly inevitable. After defeating relegation rivals London Irish on Friday they are now 10 points clear of the drop and look odds-on to stay in the Premiership next season.
