Challenge Cup – Round 4 Preview

Round four of the European Challenge Cup is typically one that starts to sort out the wheat from the chaff. Unfortunately it also tends to be round that clubs already down the pecking order roll out weakened lineups which can end up with some lopsided results.

Newcastle, Edinburgh, and Connacht are all undefeated and have realistic ambitions of winning the competition. Unfortunately Americas players won’t feature for any of them this week, but there is one more team at the top who had a Canadian in their ranks on Thursday. Pau maintained their perfect record as they defeated Agen with Matt Tierney coming off the bench early in the second half as a second half replacement at tighthead prop.

The rest of the weekend is virtually crickets as far as the Americas are concerned, with only four players involved for three different teams.

Friday has a pair of US Eagles regulars lining up for Worcester Warriors on the road match against Oyonnax. Joe Taufete’e continues at hooker and Andrew Durutalo as at openside flank. Both played in the win over the same opponent at Sixways last weekend.

Saturday it’s Argentina who contribute the other two players, and both in the same match. Mariano Galarza starts his second in a row for Gloucester after returning from long-term injury. On the other side of the field Serafin Bordoli will play flyhalf for Zebre, just his second start of the season.
