Guatemala’s Women’s Rugby 7’s team conquered Gold at the Central American Games. Played on Sunday and Monday in Managua, Nicaragua the Guatemalans were undefeated. Wins over Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua secured the inaugural title.
The 2017 Central American Games (Juegos Deportivos Centroamericanos) is the 11th of history of the Juegos Deportivos Centroamericanos. It is, however, the first to feature Rugby 7’s. Both Men’s and Women’s Rugby 7’s feature.

Guatemala and Costa Rica were undefeated on Day One. They would meet twice on day two, once in the round-robin and later on in the tournament final. Before their first match they both had one other game to play.
The Guatemalans opened their second day strongly. In their first match they powered past Nicaragua, winning 34-0. Costa Rica then took to the field, taking-on Honduras. The Costa Ricans humbled Honduras, winning 78-0.
In the final round-robin fixture Guatemala overcame Costa Rica 12-0. Yet when they met in the final it was far closer. In a match which came down to a missed kick at goal, Guatemala won Gold, doing so by 7-5. Hosts Nicaragua won Bronze by beating El Salvador 20-5.
The 2021 Central American Games are to be played in Santa Tecla, El Salvador. In addition to Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua all returning it is possible that Belize and Panama will compete in Rugby 7’s at the Games.
