Colombia’s Women secured Gold Medals at the Juegos Bolivarianos (Bolivarian Games) at home in Santa Marta. They did so by defeating Paraguay in the final. Peru finished third to claim Bronze.
The three-day event begun with Colombia sending a warning to the opposition. In the opening match of the Juegos Bolivarianos Colombia downed Venezuela 33-0. It was followed by Paraguay facing Peru in game two. With Paraguay winning Silver their opening 21-15 defeat against Peru underlines their impressive run of results which followed.
Peru’s win in the opening day would not be replicated on the second, and final, day. In their opening match they were cleanly beaten by the host nation. Colombia’s 38-0 defeat underlined Las Tucanes as the favorites for Gold.
There was more to follow from Colombia as Las Tucanes eased to victory over Paraguay, winning 35-5. In between beating Peru and Paraguay there was a pivotal contest in the make-up of the competition. It saw Paraguay completing a 24-17 win over Venezuela.
In the remaining match prior to the play-off’s Peru added to Venezuela’s frustrations by winning an even contest 14-12. With it Peru avoided Colombia in the Semi Finals, instead securing a place against Paraguay.
Colombia and Paraguay completed big wins in the Semi Finals to secure their Gold Medal showdown in the tournament final. Colombia defeated Venezuela 33-0 while Paraguay won 30-0 against Peru.
Before Colombia and Paraguay met in the final Peru sealed Bronze, doing so with a 21-7 win over Venezuela. It was the end to a back-and-forth tournament for Las Tumis.
Las Tucanes performed well in the final to secure Gold. The 19-5 victory over Paraguay underlined Colombia as the strongest women’s rugby competitor involved in the Bolivarian Games. Having played in the Rio Olympics in 2016, winning Gold in Santa Marta adds to the sustained developed of women’s rugby 7’s in the country.
