Uruguay name 84-strong training group

Uruguay have released a list of 84 players who have gathered at the Charrúa High Performance Centre in Montevideo to prepare for a number of upcoming competitions. The first will be the Sudamérica Rugby Cup final against the Argentina XV on Friday, September 29, at Estadio Alberto Suppici in Colonia. A Uruguayan ‘A’ side will then compete in the Americas Pacific Challenge, after which Los Teros will play two test matches against Namibia while the Uruguay XV again compete in the Campeonato Argentino.

Los Teros will also be looking towards the World Rugby Qualifiers against Canada on January 27 and February 3, the second of which also signals the beginning of the 2018 Americas Rugby Championship. A huge number of promising loose forwards, midfielders, and outside backs have been included with the Uruguay Sevens side also to be selected from the group to compete on the South American circuit and attempt to qualify for the RWC Sevens in San Francisco.

Among those named are 13 members of the 2015 World Cup squad, including two notable returnees from sabbatical. Former captain Carlos Arboleya and standout midfielder Joaquin Prada return to contention after two years away committed to post-graduate studies. Trébol second row Mathias Palomeque is recalled having won the last of his 31 caps in April 2016.

A total of 10 players from the Teritos squad that finished in 3rd place at the World Rugby u20 Trophy have been selected. Front rowers Jaime Coll, Yamandú Arburúas, and Guillermo Pujadas are joined by teenage loose forward trio James McCubbin, Manuel Ardao, and Santiago Civetta. Midfielders Agustin Della Corte and Marcos Pastore are named, as are winger Martín Fitipaldo and goal-kicking fullback Alejo Piazza.

Among those unavailable are four overseas-based professionals – second row Manuel Leindekar, flanker Franco Lamanna, and halfback duo Agustín Ormaechea and Felipe Berchesi.
