The South America 1 vs North America 2 Rugby World Cup 2019 qualifying dates are now known. Uruguay will meet the runner-up of the two-match Canada vs USA series in 2018. The Canadians host the Eagles in the first match this coming Saturday in Hamilton, Ontario.
Uruguay earned the right to compete in the South vs North series by virtue of winning the South American ‘A’ Championship. Wins over Brazil, Chile and Paraguay confirmed Los Teros as South America 1.
North America 1 will earn direct qualification for Rugby World Cup 2019. North America 2, on the other hand, will face South America 1 with the winner qualifying for Japan 2019. The loser will enter repechage with one last chance at qualifying.
The South vs North series will be home-and-away. The lower ranked of the two competitors will host the first fixture on January 27. The return fixture will be played on February 03 in the higher ranked country. The second of these matches will double as a match for the Americas Rugby Championship.
Presently Uruguay is ranked 18th in the world. The USA is one place higher while Canada is 23rd. In the Americas they are 2nd-4th. Should the Eagles win and these rankings positions hold firm then Uruguay would play away to Canada first up. The prospect of a chilly fixture on a snow-covered fixture may therefore await Los Teros.
