Uruguay has confirmed upcoming international test rugby. Los Teros are to play five matches, all in South America, in May and June. All but one of these are to be at home and they are to be supplemented by two further, non-capped, internationals.
The internationals are to be a part of two separate tournaments. The first of these is the South American A Championship. This year’s edition doubles as the final round of South America’s region qualifiers for Rugby World Cup 2019. The prize for the winner is a home-and-away series against either Canada or the USA. The winner of that will play in Japan 2019. The loser will have a final shot at qualifying via repechage.
The second tournament is to be the 2017 Nations Cup. The competition is to be ground-breaking with it being played outside of Europe for the first time in history. All, but one, of edition have been played in Romania. This year, however, Montevideo will host the World Rugby competition.
The Nations Cup is to give Los Teros home test matches against both Russia and Spain, two serious contenders for Japan 2019.
In between the two tournaments Uruguay is to also play a match against the Argentina XV. With it being the Argentina XV rather than Los Pumas it is to be non-capped. Rankings points will not be on the line. Uruguay are to also play against Emerging Italy.
