A 19-7 Semi Final defeat to Germany ended Chile’s hopes of securing Core Status for the 2017-18 HSBC Sevens Series in Hong Kong. Los Cóndores did not find the same form that saw them win their first four matches of the tournament, with several errors contributing to the disappointing defeat. The physical and direct style employed by the Germans also caused problems with their bigger men doing damage en route to a three-tries-to-one finish. Francisco Neira scored the only try for Chile with Marcelo Torrealba adding the conversion.
The other Semi Final saw Spain defeat Papua New Guinea by 21-12, a scoreline that flattered PNG somewhat as Spain has already chalked up a 21-0 lead before opting to save energy ahead of the final. It proved a successful strategy as they overcame Germany by 12-7 to win Core Status back after a three-year hiatus. The promotion is perhaps appropriate given Spain’s surprise qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics, and also a fair reflection of their performance in Hong Kong.
While the Chileans will undoubtedly feel let down by their game against Germany, they can take solace in the considerable improvement they have made in recent months. With a number of young players in the side they won widespread praise for their ambitious style of play and will approach next season with renewed confidence that Core Status is within their grasp. The new strategic agreement with Argentina can help them develop further with participation in the 2018 World Cup Sevens also an achievable target.
