Nicaragua Advances to Form Test Side

Rugby in the Americas continues to grow as Nicaragua is advancing to form its first official test side. Together with Honduras the countries are the only Central American Republics absent from the South American C Championship. This is likely to change, possibly in 2017.

Both Nicaragua and Honduras received Sudamérica Rugby officials in mid-2016. The successful meetings saw Nicaragua officially obtaining Sudamérica Rugby associate membership status. In December Nicaragua then defeated Guatemala’s u23 side in a friendly. The occasion was one of great celebration for the regional rugby.

The Federación Nicaragüense de Rugby (Fenirugby) is currently working hard with local government authorities to get authorization to establish an official test side. Details from Nicaragua confirm that a formal relationship is being set-up with Fenirugby working with the National Institute of Sport – Instituto Nicaragüense del Deporte (IND).

Fenirugby President Michael Peart is quoted as saying “we are working on the legal aspects with the IND.”

Fenirugby is set to confirm a roster to prepare for the 2017 Central American Games. The national capital of Manágua will host the games. The games are to take place from December 03-17.

Involvement in Sudamérica Rugby’s South American C Championship remains unconfirmed though entirely attainable. For it to occur in 2017 changes to the schedule to that from previous years would be required. In 2016 Guatemala hosted the tournament from December 04-10. El Salvador did so in 2015 from December 06-12.
