Venezuela sevens named for Olympic qualifying

The Argentine city of Santa Fé is to receive the teams from eight countries this weekend (June 5-7) who are all looking to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Rugby is to return to the Olympic Games for the first time in 92 years and is to do so in the reduced format of Rugby Sevens.

Argentina, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Chile and Venezuela are the countries participating with the winner in the men’s and women’s sections both qualifying directly for the 2016 Olympic Games, joining the host nation Brazil.

Venezuelan men’s head coach Gustavo López commented:

“This event provides a direct link to the Olympic Games in each category, the women have prepared very well and the men performed strongly in the recent Central American Games.”
