Colombia Receives World Rugby Grant

Colombia is to receive a World Rugby grant for the year 2017. The global governing body will invest £60,000 in the Federación Colombiana de Rugby (FCR) for the period of January 01 – December 31 2017.

The investment is to be used to cover administration, governance and educational programs administered by the FCR.

Colombia had a successful year in 2016. Los Tucanes were undefeated in the South American B Championship. They subsequently defeated Rugby Americas North winners and pushed Paraguay in South American A repechage.

Las Tucanas also broke new ground. The Colombian women’s 7’s side competed at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. At junior level Colombia’s under 18’s won the South American B title.

The achievements have been made possible through extensive growth. The Get Into Rugby program and other initiatives have seen player numbers expand. Combined with results from representative sides the sport has grown extensively.

World Rugby has been supportive of the growth. The union began with a £10,000 annual investment which increased to £30,000. In 2016 it was further increased to a record £40,000. For 2017 it will be even higher at £60,000.
