Double-Gold for Canada at RAN 7s

Canada has claimed the title in both the men’s and women’s brackets of the Rugby Americas North 7s tournament in Trinidad & Tobago. While the two teams competed under the ‘Maple Leafs’ development banner, the men sent a near-full strength side under new head coach Damian McGrath to prepare for the start of the upcoming 2016-17 HSBC Sevens Series. The women sent a very young team with a number of players new to international rugby. Both succeeded in convincing fashion.

The men had a comfortable ride to the finals with only two pool matches, defeating the British Virgin Islands 59-0 and Bermuda 52-0. Mexico gave them their toughest contest of the weekend in the cup quarter final, with the final score 24-0. The rest of the way proved a formality, with 40-0 and 52-5 wins over Jamaica and Guyana respectively, though Guyana will take pride in being the only team to score a try against the runaway winners during the competition.

The women went one better, winning all six of their matches. Perhaps most impressive is that they did not concede a single point during the entire tournament, finishing with a points differential of 287-0. Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Turks & Caicos, and Jamaica all fell in the pool stages, with Mexico their opposition in the semi finals and a rematch with Jamaica in the cup final. Head coach Sandro Fiorino will be very pleased with his charges, and will have plenty to discuss with senior women’s head coach John Tait when it comes time to select the HSBC Sevens Series team for Dubai.

Other results saw Jamaica defeat Trinidad & Tobago in the men’s bronze final, while Mexico took the plate final with a win over Bermuda. The host team finished one higher in the women’s bracket, taking home third spot by topping Mexico, while Guyana defeated the Bahamas to finish in 5th.
