Video: Fernández Shows his Class vs Toulon

Patricio Fernández showed his class today, scoring two tries for Clermont against Toulon. Having started at fly half the Argentine play-maker kicked two first half penalties but it was his second half tries which were of greater note.

An injury to French fullback Scott Spedding resulted in Camille Lopez coming on and Fernández moving to the back. It was Lopez whom Fernández combined with for his first try. Following several phrases of pick-and-go Lopez kicked a cross-kick which Fernández gathered to score in the left corner.

The 53rd minute score saw Clermont closing in on Toulon. It reduced Toulon’s lead to just two points. There was more to follow though as a second try from Fernández three minutes later gave the Central French side the lead.

Fernández’ second try was a reminder of why some have compared him to Juan Martín Hernández. Providing support for back-rower Damien Chouly, Fernández received a pass several meters inside the Toulon half. He ran and chipped over Leigh Halfpenny and chased to regather ahead of Sebastian Tells Borde.

The 56th minute try gave Clermont the lead. It was unconverted by Lopez which, ultimately, was important. Toulon’s 23-21 win came late in the game. Coincidentally Fernández kicked two first half penalties.

Still aged just 21 Fernández is a Puma in waiting. Current UAR policies block the selection of those based in Europe. The union does, nonetheless, allow for players to be selected in exceptional circumstances.

Contracted to Clermont until 2018, Americas Rugby News has learned that Fernández is considering his future options. On offer is remaining at Clermont. Alternatively he will be highly sought after to return to Argentina to play Super Rugby.
