Chile Defeat Paraguay in Junior South American Championship

Chile’s u’19’s set-up a final against Uruguay by beating Paraguay on Wednesday. Played at the Old Grangonian Club in Santiago the home side backed-up their opening round win over Brazil on Sunday.

The home side enjoyed the better of play to win comfortably. With early pressure mounting Los Yacarés were down to 14 men in the 13th minute. The yellow carding of Gastón Navas was shortly followed by the game’s opening points.

Lucca Avelli crossed for the first try before Benjamín Baraona continued his strong form against Brazil to score Chile’s second. With the only remaining first half points coming from a Baraona penalty Chile led 17-0 at the interval.

Paraguay’s second half did not get underway as planned. They were again down to 14 men as Matías Ferreira was yellow carded.

A third Chilean try from Augusto Bohme extended the lead but Paraguay would not give in. 54 minutes into the match Juan Aldama scored for Los Yacarés. Nicolás Heisecke’s conversion made it a 29-7 scoreline.

Just before the try Chile lost Rodrigo Moya to a yellow card. It mattered not as Chile would score in the 60th minute through Santiago Videla. Avelli added the conversion before Paraguay scored their second, Fabricio Cabrera making it a 36-12 match after 62 minutes.

Despite Paraguay’s courage they would be unable to further trouble the scorers. The one remaining score in the final quarter came from Marcelo Huerta who made it a 41-12 final score.

Chile and Paraguay will both play again on Saturday. Chile will face Uruguay in the final while Paraguay will take-on Brazil in the battle for third place. The winner of the final will qualify for the 2017 Junior World Trophy.
