More Rugby Championship Matches will be played in Europe

More Rugby Championship Matches will be played in Europe, the SANZAAR Chief Executive Andy Marinos has confirmed.

Argentina’s decision to relocate their home victory against Australia to London has been warmly accepted by SANZAAR. Set to take place on October 8 the historic match is to open the way for future matches to also be moved outside of Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

In supporting the move Marinos noted “We saw how positive the World Cup was in the UK and we feel our game is about taking it to as many supporters as possible. It’s a good opportunity for extra exposure and bringing a meaningful Rugby Championship game to London is something that will continue to promote rugby at a moment when its popularity is continuing to grow.”

“Argentina have been making one of the fastest rises in international rugby and with many of their players in Europe there’s always going to be a strong affiliation for them. Australia, New Zealand, South Africa all have huge ex-pat communities in the UK so these games will be attractive to them.”

While the fixture is to be the first of its kind there have been three Australia vs New Zealand fixtures played on neutral ground. While not being Rugby Championship, formerly Tri-Nations, matches there have been games played in Hong Kong and Tokyo. Both countries also played one test match each against the USA in Chicago.
