Uruguay Signs New Agreement to Continue Spreading Rugby

The URU recently signed an agreement with the Municipal E, where the Estadio Charrúa is situated. The agreement will see the sport developed nationwide.

With a population of almost 160,000 the Municipal is situated in a privileged metropolitan location. The surroundings are predominantly residential.

It is also home to some of Uruguay’s leading rugby clubs. Among them Carrasco Polo Club, Old Boy and Old Christian’s. The oldest club in the country (and outside of the U.K and Ireland), Montevideo Cricket originated in the area too. It has since relocated.

The socioeconomic diversity of the Municipal encompasses and includes all of the social spectrum. This ranges from the highest levels to those in situations of extreme vulnerability. As such there exists a significant challenge when defining common development for all regions and determine priorities.

URU and Sudamérica Rugby Council member Andrés Pieroni declared “the first strategic objective of the agreement is the development and knowledge of rugby in the different slums surrounding the area“.

“The plan is to be able to take rugby to all sectors of the population, transmitting its values and establishing some kind of league in which the children from the slums could share the experience. This would be the beginning an from there it would incorporate people into our great family“.
