Upsets mark Day One in Monaco

Tournament favorites Canada and Samoa each tasted defeat on the first day of the Olympic repechage qualifying tournament in Monaco on Saturday. Canada lost to surprise package Germany in their final match of the day, with the underdogs controlling possession and looking the better side. Samoa were upset by Ireland, who have emerged as a dark horse to win after three impressive victories on Day One.

Both Canada and Samoa remain in the hunt for the Olympic spot but will have to improve on Day Two as the games get progressively more difficult. Canada will face a potent Russian side whose size and speed saw them top Pool C. Samoa will meet Hong Kong in the quarter-final with a chance to turn their inconsistent start to the tourney around.

South America will have one representative in the Cup draw, as Chile qualified after strong wins over Tunisia and Morocco. They were outclassed by Russia but have shown an ability to score tries thus far and could yet play a role as spoilers when they start their second day against Germany.

Uruguay came away with one victory from three on Day One, getting routed by Americas rivals Canada and coming up short to Germany. Their win came over a lively but overwhelmed Sri Lankan side. Uruguay play Tunisia in the consolation draw.

All matches will be streamed live by World Rugby. Canadian viewers can watch the action live on TSN 2 and TSN Go.
