Rugby Canada appoints Steve Meehan as new Head Coach

Rugby Canada has wasted no time in naming a replacement for Kingsley Jones as Head Coach of their Senior Men’s team. Steve Meehan will take over the struggling program, the 58-year-old making the move from Australia after a long career in professional rugby.

Most recently the Director of Rugby at Queensland premier club side GPS, Meehan has 17 years of experience at the highest levels of domestic rugby. That includes a stint as Head Coach with Bath in the English Premiership, and assistant roles in the French Top 14 with Stade Français and Toulon, the Western Force and Queensland Reds in Super Rugby, and with Japan Top League side Kintetsu.

Meehan was initially set to take over the Toronto Arrows for the 2024 Major League Rugby season, but before he could assume the job the club collapsed. At the time sources suggested he had been targeted to take over the national team role once familiar with the Canadian player pool.

This is Meehan’s first international appointment. A media release does not indicate any initial contract length, but he will be immediately tasked with guiding Canada through the 2027 World Cup qualification process. Assuming he succeeds, it’s likely that his position is secure through the flagship tournament that will be hosted in Meehan’s home country of Australia.
