Canada Men and Mexico Women claim RAN 7s titles

Canada’s Men’s Sevens team took their first step towards World Series qualification as they claimed the Men’s Tier 1 title at the Rugby Americas North 7s tournament in Arima, Trinidad. Mexico were the best of the Women’s side, with the two respective winners earning spots in the World Rugby Challenger Series.

It was a routine effort from the Canadian side, who featured four players currently signed to Major League Rugby sides. Their final tally read 169 points scored, 0 against in five games. A pool match against Barbados was cancelled due to inclement weather. Trinidad & Tobago defeated Mexico to earn a spot opposite Canada in the Men’s Final but could do little to stop the tide.

Las Serpientes also went undefeated in the Women’s draw but had a more challenging route than the Canadian Men. Jamaica were only a step behind, losing by identical 19-12 scores in both the round-robin and the Cup Final. Trinidad & Tobago, who entered two teams, finished in third spot.

The Men’s Tier 2 title went to the Dominican Republic, who won all five of their matches by comfortable margins and matched Canada’s defensive effort with zero points scored against. Promotion to next year’s top tier accompanied the bragging rights, with Barbados to be relegated after finishing at the bottom of the Men’s Tier 1 table.
