Rugby Sevens has been cut from the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The event was moved from Victoria, Australia to Glasgow, Scotland. The change follows the Australian state complaining about rising costs and subsequently pulling out of hosting. Glasgow stepped up but has done so by axing Rugby Sevens among other sports.
The Scottish city also hosted the 2014 Commonwealth Games. That event included seventeen sports while the 2026 event will feature just ten. This number comes with a number of events having been downsized. Cycling, for example, will not include mountain biking or road races while rhythmic gymnastics has been cut leaving only artistic gymnastics.
Rugby Sevens sold out Ibrox Stadium at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Since then there have been changes which have seen no more Scotland Rugby Sevens team nor England or Wales. Team Great Britain has neither been the same force nor had the same popularity. World Rugby has decreased the size of the World Circuit during this time period with Scotland dropped.
The Canadian Women finished 4th at both the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games. Men’s Rugby Sevens joined the Commonwealth Games earlier and Canada competed at every edition since the debut in 1998. Additional Americas participants have included the Bahamas, Barbados, the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Guyana, and Trinidad & Tobago.
