Agustín Creevy to play URC for Benetton

Agustín Creevy is not done yet. Weeks after retiring from Los Pumas, the former Argentine test captain has signed to play in the United Rugby Championship (URC). Creevy join Benetton, Italy’s leading team.

Benetton will see Creevy ticking off every box of all elite professional rugby competitions. His professional career has seen him playing in the Top 14 in France, the English Premiership, Super Rugby and now the URC. His clubs include Biarritz, Clermont, Montpellier, Worcester Warriors, London Irish, Sale Sharks and Los Jaguares.

His new club has a well-rounded Argentine legion. Pumas Thomas Gallo, Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro, Lautaro Bazán Vélez, Tomás Albornoz and Ignacio Mendy all play for Benetton. So too does the uncapped Bautista Bernasconi and Italian capped Argentine player Juan Ignacio Brex and Iván Nemer.

Bernasconi has been on Los Pumas’ roster in 2024 but has not received game-time. Mendy put in a star performance against Uruguay, Gallo is the first-choice loose head prop while Albornoz has become first-choice in recent matches.

Creevy retired from Los Pumas in August. He had the honor of earning his final, and 110th, cap for Argentina in his home town in La Plata. He played against Australia at the age of 39. In addition to Benetton, Creevy had offers to keep playing in England and also from France.

Creevy played in Rugby World Cups 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023. The included two Semi Finals. His longevity saw him set a new Argentine record for matches played in Rugby World Cups. He captained Los Pumas to their first-ever victory over the Springboks, a 37-25 win in Durban.

Additional results of note under his leadership include Argentina’s first Rugby Championship win; a 21-17 victory over Australia in Mendoza in 2014. It was followed by a 18-13 win over France in Paris.
