Uruguay Notch Up Win Over Netherlands in World Rugby U20 Trophy

Uruguay notched up a 32-16 win over the Netherlands on Friday. The result of the match sees Los Teritos into the Bronze Final of the World Rugby U20 Trophy. Uruguay will face either Scotland or Japan with the other side facing the USA in the tournament final.

The Netherlands will feel unhappy with the result. At half-time, the Dutch held a 10-03 lead. However, Uruguay regrouped and took charge in the second-half. Uruguay ran in four second-half tries while the Netherlands landed two penalties.

Uruguay’s only score of the opening half was also the first score of the match. Fly half Francisco Landauer landed a penalty. Second-rower Teun Karst responded with a 15th minute try for the Netherlands. It was converted by fullback Ilan Vaasen who also slotted a first-half penalty.

Uruguay’s comeback began in the 43rd minute. Center Santiago Gini combined with scrum-half Pedro Hoblog who scored under the posts. Landauer converted to make it 10-10.

Los Teritos went ahead seven minutes late. This time Landauer created and exited a try. He split the defense for a try. His his own conversion the South Americans were seven points ahead. Landauer was involved shortly thereafter a he converted Franco Bertini’s score.

The Netherlands responded with Vaasen landing a penalty. It meant Uruguay were leading by 11 points as the final quarter began. Center Augusto Flangini showed excellent foot work to fool the defense and set-up a 29-13 lead. The goal-kickers exchanged late penalties.

Los Teritos play again on Wednesday as do the USA. The final match day of the tournament will confirm final placings.
