Guyana Down Trinidad & Tobago by Narrowest of Margins

Guyana were winners over Trinidad & Tobago on Saturday. Played at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Guyana won by the narrowest of margins. The 24-23 win was the first of two matches between the countries this year. They will met again on June 01.

Long-serving captain, Joseph Quashie led Trinidad & Tobago. He was joined by fellow veterans such as Nigel Ballington, and Jonathan Taylor. It was Taylor who looked to have secured a win on full-time for the Calypso Warriors. Taylor showed tremendous pace and foot work to break clear. He was, however, tackled short of the try zone.

Guyana’s hero was Rondell McArthur. He scored a hat-trick for the Green Machine. McArthur and his Green Machine teammates celebrated the win with great reason; the match was Guyana’s first since 2019.

The fixture marked the resumption of international competition for Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago. It was also the opening match in the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Men’s XV’s tournament. Next up will be two matches on May 18. Jamaica and Barbados host Bermuda and Saint Vincent & The Grenadines respectively.

Guyana now take a one point lead into the rematch on June 01. It will be a home match for the Green Machine. Trinidad & Tobago will be looking out for revenge. The home side at the Port of Spain looked to have won the match with time up only to knock-on.
