Uruguay name Argentine Rodolfo Ambrosio as new Head Coach

Uruguay have a new Head Coach. After a lengthily search, the URU have name Argentine Rodolfo Ambrosio as the new coach of Los Teros. Ambrosio replaces Esteban Meneses who was in charge of Uruguay from 2016-2023.

The 62-year-old is well known in South American Rugby. Ambrosio coached Brazil during the golden age. He was appointed Head Coach of Brazil in 2014 and left the post as the most successful Brazilian coach in history. Under Ambrosio Brazil defeated the USA in 2016; Canada in 2017, and 2019; Belgium in 2017; Portugal in 2017, and 2019; the Argentina XV in 2018; and the Georgia XV in 2018.

Ambrosio subsequently coached Colombia’s former professional team, Los Cafeteros Pro. Prior to that he coached Argentina at u20 level. He also coached amateur rugby in his hometown of Córdoba while his professional coaching career started in Italy. He was in charge of Petrarca and Segni.

As a player, Ambrosio is a historic name for Italy. Ambrorio is the first Argentine to have played for Italy. He played for Italy from 1987-1989 and was on the roster for the inaugural Rugby World Cup. Forty years later, in 2027, he is now facing the likelihood of coaching Uruguay at the World Cup which, like the first, will have matches in Australia.

The Argentine played fly half for Italy against New Zealand at Rugby World Cup 1987. The fixture was the first ever Rugby World Cup match. It was Ambrosio’s test debut. He went on to earn 12 caps for Italy. He played in wins over Spain and Zimbabwe.

Ambrosio comes from the traditional Córdoba club Tala RC. The club is the regular home venue for Los Dogos in Super Rugby Americas. Ambrosio went from Tala to play in Italy. He did so for CUS Roma and San Donà.

Uruguay’s international competition in 2024 will begin in July. Los Teros will play three matches as part of the mid-year internationals. All will be home matches. Uruguay will face France Development (next-of-XV), Argentina and Scotland.

A forthcoming announcement will confirm the locations for these matches. ARN understands that Uruguay will face France Development and Scotland at the Estadio Charrúa in Montevideo and take-on Los Pumas in Maldonado.
