The governing body of rugby in South and Central America, has put together the statistical information to detail the women’s playing numbers throughout there region. The organization received information from the national unions.
From Guatemala in the north to Tierra del Fuego in the south the organization is intercontinental and growing. The three missing countries are 1 Guyana, 2 Suriname and 3 French Guyana.Both Guyana and French Guyana are affiliated with Rugby Americas North, the later of the two having World Rugby membership. Suriname remains inactive.
In total there are more than 10,500 regular female athletes. The number, however, can be multiplied by six when adding those involved in a number of programs such as Get Into Rugby.
Brazil is the regional leaders with 2,567 players and the strongest tradition in the sport. It is, however, second to Peru which has 2,800 women playing the sport.
Argentina leads in organizational terms with 173 registered coaches, this for an active playing population of 2,130.
