Mexico’s Rugby World Cup dream got off to a rocketing start as the North Americans outclassed the Bahamas on Saturday afternoon. The 39-3 victory was the ideal start for the Mexicans who are seeking to develop a competent enough side to rise the ranks in the Americas.
Las Serpientes away win in Nassau was a comprehensive final scoreline. At the midway point, however, it was a vastly different scenario as Mexico held a 7-0 lead.
The final scoreline puts Mexico in a strong position to press for a second win. Mexico’s next match will be in two weeks time against Bermuda on May 21 in Mexico City.
One the same day there Bahamas will travel to face the Cayman Islands in one of three additional fixtures. The remaining two are to see Guyana playing host to Jamaica and Barbados taking on Trinidad & Tobago.
In total eight countries are competing in the Caribbean zone of Rugby World Cup 2019 qualification. The fixtures also count for the 2016 Rugby Americas North Championship with the overall winner advancing to the following stage of Rugby World Cup 2019 qualification.
The eight competing teams in the Rugby Americas North Championship are divided into two pools of four. Mexico’s win over the Bahamas was the opening fixture of the North Zone, a pool which also contains Bermuda and the Cayman Islands.

The South Zone is led jointly by Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana. The two Caribbean nations got their campaigns off to strong starts last month when they defeated Jamaica and Barbados respectively. Should Barbados and / or Jamaica lose at home on May 21 then they will be eliminated.
Jamaica earlier qualified for the South Zone by defeating St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the opening Rugby World Cup 2019 qualifying fixture in March.
