Latino Flavor continues to be added to the Miami Sharks. The latest player to sign for the East Coast’s new Major Leaguer Rugby (MLR) franchise is Matías Freyre. The 29-year-old joins after previously playing MLR for the Houston SaberCats and the San Diego Legion over a period from 2020-2023.
Freyre has a Rugby Sevens background. He debuted for Argentina on the World Sevens Circuit in 2018 and earlier for Argentina u18’s and u20’s. His move to the MLR was from Newman in Buenos Aires. It was in the Argentine capital where Freyre learned his rugby. He was, nonetheless, born in Kansas City.
He returned to the USA as a professional rugby player. World Rugby eligibility laws mean that Freyre is USA eligible. He can make the allegiance transfer from Argentina to the USA. Such a transfer is viable for Freyre due to him being born in the USA and last lasting represented Argentina in 2018. This is more than the minimum of three years required between switching international teams.
In addition to the signature of Matías Freyre, the Miami Sharks have also added three other players over the past week. Former New England Free Jacks hooker Sean McNulty has signed as have former Maori All Black Dan Pryor, who joins from the San Diego Legion, and Michael Etete, a second-rower from England.
