Brazil Lose South American Crown to Argentina for the First Time

Argentina ended Brazil’s dominance of South American Women’s Rugby Sevens With a 20-12 win over Brazil in the final, Las Yaguaretés were crowned South American Women’s Sevens Champions for 2023 on Sunday. It marked Argentina’s first-ever title.

Played in Asuncion, Paraguay the tournament involved seven South American countries: Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Uruguay. Argentina won Gold, Brazil Silva, and Chile Bronze.

Since the inaugural competition in Venezuela in 2004, Brazil had seven been dethroned. Earlier this year, Brazil were 17-5 winners over Argentina in Montevideo. The title in Montevideo saw Brazil qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Until 2023, 2015 was the one time in which Brazil had not been the South American champion. The 2015 edition which was played in Santa Fé, Argentina was won by Colombia. Brazil was not involved in the competition.

Las Yaguaretés overcame As Yaras 20-12 in the final in Asunción. Sofía González and Virginia Brígido Chamorro both scored two tries for Argentina. They were joined y Gimena Mattus, Azul Medina, Micaela Pallero, Brisa Trigo and captain Paula Pedrozo. Andrea Moreno, Cristal Escalante, Malena Díaz and Candela Delgado featured as replacements.
