Chile send Brazil RWCQ Warning as slick Selknam down Cobras

Chile sent Brazil a Rugby World Cup 2027 Qualifiers warning on Saturday. The Super Rugby Americas clash between Selknam and Os Cobras was won comfortably by the Chileans. Selknam were 39-19 winners at the Estadio Centro de Alto Rendimiento de Rugby in Santiago.

MATCH NOTES
  • Selknam outscored Os Cobras by seven tries to three.
  • The first-half was tight; Selknam held a 17-14 lead after 40 minutes.
  • Selknam scored four second-half tries compared to one scored by the Brazilians.
  • Selknam’s goal-kicking accuracy was abysmal. Tomás Salas converted 1/4 (25%) and Juan Cruz Reyes converted 1/3 (33%). If Selknam had landed all conversions then they would have scored 10 more points and won the match 49-19.
  • Robert Tenório scored two tries in the match for Os Cobras.
  • Raimundo Martínez played in the 7 shirt but played as hooker at lineouts. Experimentation also saw loose head Salvador Lues playing hooker in the scrums.
  • Os Cobras’ discipline was poor in the second-half. Two forwards were yellow carded and one was red carded. Gabriel Oliveira’s sending-off for shoulder to the head contact is certain to result in a suspension.
  • Selknam’s bonus point win takes the team up to 23 competition points. It is presently the same number as the 2nd placed Peñarol. The Uruguayans can move ahead with points against Yacare later this evening.
  • Os Cobras return to Brazil without having secured points from the contest.
