History Made: Argentina Champions at 2025 Hong Kong 7’s

History has been made. For the first time ever, Argentina won the Hong Kong 7’s. Los Pumas 7’s did so by going unbeaten at the tournament in the special administrative region of China. The special day for Argentine rugby was also a double celebration for the Americas as Canada’s Women won the Bronze Final. Shaky Valenzuela, Olivia Apps and Sabrina Poulin scored tries for the Canadians against France.

Veteran German Schultz scored a hat-trick in Argentina’s Semi Final win over Australia. His three tries were accompanied by tries to Marcos Moneta and Alejo Lavayen.

Argentina defeated France 12-7 in the Final in Hong Kong. Neither team managed first-half points. Argentina then scored tries thorough Santiago Álvarez and Marcos Moneta to go 12-0 ahead. France scored a consolation try seconds after the clock had expired.

Argentina’s historic first-ever Hong Kong 7’s title is a third consecutive tournament victory on the World Sevens Circuit. Los Pumas 7’s were the champions at the previous event in Vancouver, Canada and before that in Perth, Australia.

Winning three consecutive tournaments underlines Argentina as the best team on the circuit in 2025. Argentina have only ever won three straight tournaments once before. Argentina did so last season by winning the Cape Town 7’s, Perth 7’s and Vancouver 7’s tournaments in succession.

In addition to winning the Hong Kong 7’s title for the first time, Argentina’s victory also means they extend their lead in the overall standings. Argentina are top of the table on 88 points ahead of the second placed Fiji on 76 points. The Americas’ other competitors are Uruguay in 10th and the USA in bottom spot.
