Argentina played scintillating rugby on the opening day of the 2025 Hong Kong 7’s. Played at the new Kai Tak Stadium, Los Pumas 7’s were on fire; the South Americans racked up two huge wins. The Americas’ other Men’s competitors did not perform so well while there were mixed results in the Women’s fixtures.
Los Pumas 7’s showed why they lead the Men’s standings. Argentina defeated Ireland 35-7 and the USA 52-5 to go top of Pool A. They arguably performed even better than their strong showing at the previous stop on the Sevens Circuit where Argentina extended their dynasty in Vancouver. Fiji also defeated Ireland and the USA in their matches.
Like the USA Men’s Eagles, Uruguay were winless in their two matches. Los Teros 7’s fell to a 40-7 defeat against South Africa and a 29-0 loss against New Zealand.
Three teams were above the rest in the Women’s competition. Olympic Gold Medalists, New Zealand went 2-0 on the day with a 45-0 win over China and a 33-21 win over the USA. The Women’s Eagles were 31-12 winners over Brazil in their other match. Brazil recovered from the loss against the USA to celebrate a 36-10 win over China.
Canada complimented Brazil and the USA by winning one and losing one match on day one. The Canadians opened with a 24-17 win over Japan before falling to a 26-15 defeat against Australia. Canada have key class against Spain to open Day Two.
