Unconvincing Pampas Down Red Yacare in Buenos Aires

Los Pampas won unconvincing against Yacare on Friday. The Buenos Aires side were 19-7 winners over the Asunción-based Yacare. The visitors lost play-maker Joaquín Lamas to a first-half red card yet Los Pampas were unable to establish command on the match. Juan Manuel Leguizamón’s team missed out on a prime opportunity to complete a bonus point home win.

MATCH NOTES
  • Los Pampas outscored Yacare by three tries to one.
  • Hooker Ignacio Bottazzini scored an early try from a lineout to maul move. Francisco Quinn missed the conversion and kicked 2/4 for the night.
  • 2024 Pumas debutant Joaquín Moro showed his power from a pick-and-go for the second try.
  • Joaquín Lamas was red carded for a no arms tackle in which he made direct shoulder to head contact on Manuel Bernstein while in an upright position.
  • Yacare were 12-0 down when Lamas was red carded.
  • Alfonso Latorre scored after an assist from Quinn. The fullback converted the 37th minute try which was the home team’s final scoring moment of the night.
  • Yacare scored the only second-half points. It came from the best try of the match. Juan Cruz Strada passed wide for fellow Argentine Felipe Puertas who ran down the sideline and returned a pass to Strada who found El Rosarino Valentino Di Capua in support for the try.
  • Yacare’s scrum exposed Los Pampas on multiple occasions in the second-half.
  • Juan Cruz Strada gave Felipe Contepomi plenty to think about. He was well-organized tactically and innovative in attack. He outplayed Puma Eliseo Morales who was a replacement. Of note is that Argentina are short on scrum-halves this year; a rookie selection is highly likely.
  • The win lifts Los Pampas to join Peñarol on top spot on 14 points. Yacare are 5th just one point above Los Tarucas. Peñarol face Os Cobras in Brazil on Sunday while Los Tarucas take on Selknam in Chile.
