Peñarol were 22-18 winners over Selknam in a heated battle on Friday. The result sees Peñarol now alone at the top of the table. The win was marred by controversy, Peñarol scored a late try for victory. It came from a player who had been yellow carded despite the yellow card arguably having been insufficient as the incident merited a red card.
MATCH NOTES |
- Matías Garafulic opened the scoring with a 3rd minute penalty for the visitors. Felipe Etcheverry responded with Peñarol’s first points late in the first quarter.
- Peñarol went to the trusted lineout and maul play for the opening try
- A second try came quickly. This time Selknam misjudged a kick from Etcheverry. The bounce favored Peñarol and Etcheverry’ pass ricocheted back off a Selknam head into the hands of Felipe Arcos Pérez who scored.
- Peñarol were now on top; however, a powerful carry from Manuel Diana saw Marcelo Torrealba stealing the ball and running 65 meters upfield to score.
- Matías Garafulic slotted a penalty early in the second-half.
- Controversy followed as three players were yellow carded at once. Lucas Bianchi and Alfonso Escobar were yellowed due to having at the center of a heated battle. Out was caused by Bautista Basso sliding to take out Marco Alvano with his feet. Basso was never in a position to get the ball and was not on his feet to make the tackle. Nehuén Jauri Rivero deemed the action a yellow card.
- Selknam set-up a lineout to maul attack from which Torrealba darted over for his second try.
- The Chileans had themselves to blame after Juan Cruz Reyes kicked over only for Garafulic and Basso to collide with the Uruguayan making a break and teenager Justo Ferrario scoring 80 meters upfield. It asked further questions of Basso not having been red carded.
- Selknam looked to win late. With possession and territory the forwards attacked. Slow ball came on multiple occasions with Peñarol not rolling away; notwithstanding, Nehuén Jauri Rivero allowed it without calling advantage or awarding penalties.
- Despite having a mixed match, Felipe Etcheverry was named Man of the Match. ARN would have chosen Felipe Aliaga for the award.
