Chile Claim Glory over Canada at Sevens Challenger Series in Cape Town

Chile claimed glory at the Men’s Sevens Challenger Series in Cape Town, South Africa. Los Cóndores 7’s defeated Canada 33-7 in the Final. The big win came from five consecutive tries after Canada had crossed for the opening score.

Chilean test cap Luca Strabucchi started with two tries while Manuel Bustamante, Lucca Avelli and Julián Troncoso all touched down in the try zone for Los Cóndores 7’s. Diego Warnken successfully slotted four conversions. Kalin Sager converted Canada’s early try which was scored by Kyle Tremblay.

Chilen defeated Samoa 31-14 in one Semi Final while Canada overcame Germany 24-19 in extra time in the other Semi Final.

Germany completed the podium by defeating Samoa 19-14 in the Bronze Final. Portugal finished in 5th spot, Madagascar 6th, Uganda 7th, Japan 8th, Hong Kong 9th, Tonga 10th, Georgia 11th and Brazil bottom in 12th position.

The Challenger Series is World Rugby’s official second-tier sevens competition. Teams are competing to finish in the four four of the three-tournament Challenge Series. This will see them book a spot in the promotion / relegation tournament in California in May.

The tournament in California will include the top four teams from the Challenger Series and the bottom four from the World Rugby SVNS World Series. The second competition in the Challenger Series will take place on March 07-19, also in Cape Town. The third will be played in Krakow, Poland in April.
