Rugby World Cup 2027 In Australia To Start Out West

The biggest rugby event on earth will begin in out west in 2027. The Western Australian capital city, Perth will play host to the opening ceremony and the opening match of Rugby World Cup 2027. It means the tournament will begin and end on opposite sides of Australia as Sydney will play host to the Final.

Australia will play in the tournament opener against a yet to be confirmed opponent. The date for the tournament opener is expected to be Friday, October 01. The 24-team tournament will run for six weeks with the final likely to be played on Saturday, November 30.

Perth Stadium has a capacity of 61,266. This makes it large enough to host the tournament final. There was a bid for Rugby World Cup 2027 to come to its conclusion in Perth. Organizers opted for a repeat of Rugby World Cup 2003 which saw the final, between Australia and England, played at Sydney’s Stadium Australia.

Pictured below, Stadium Australia is the largest stadium in Australia’s largest city. The venue seats 82,000 in 2025. The venue was built in Western Sydney for the 2000 Olympic Games. It was larger at the time with 114,714 in attendance for the Closing Ceremony.

Stadium Australia and Perth Stadium were not the only contenders to host the Rugby World Cup 2027 Final. Melbourne’s MCG was also considered; however, politics cost the Victoria state capital greatly. Eleventh hour talks are now happening behind the scenes to try to secure Melbourne matches. An official announcement later this week will confirm all venues for the tournament.
