Day One of the Perth Sevens was historic for Uruguay. Los Teros Sevens overcame heavyweights Fiji and New Zealand to go top of Pool C with one round remaining. Uruguay’s win over Fiji was just the second ever while the victory over New Zealand marked the first time that Uruguay has beaten New Zealand in Rugby Sevens.
The three pool tournament did not start well for the hosts; Australia fell to Argentina in their opening match. Nonetheless, it involved a comeback as Argentina had been 26-5 ahead before ultimately winning 31-26 in extra time.

France are in control of Pool B. A try scoring double to captain Paulin Riva saw Les Bleus 7’s defeating Ireland 14-5. The French held off Great Britain next as they were 12-0 winners. Spain also defeated both Great Britain and Ireland.
Uruguay lead Pool C with a 2-0 record. Los Teros 7’s were 17-0 down against Fiji before clicking and going on to score 24 unanswered points. The 24-17 win was a dream start to the tournament; yet, things only got better for Uruguay.
Debutant Ignacio Rodriguez went over in the opening 10 seconds for Uruguay against New Zealand. He scored again late in the first-half. Uruguay went on to win the match 17-12. The historic Uruguayan win over the All Blacks Sevens ensures Uruguay a place in the Final Eight in Perth.
Fiji rebounded from the loss against Uruguay to defeat Kenya 21-14 while New Zealand were 29-14 winners in their match against the Africans. Next up for Kenya is Uruguay on Day Two.
