Day one of the 2025 Women’s Perth Sevens went well for Canada and the USA. Both North American competitors went 2-0 on the day, claiming wins over Fiji and Great Britain. The results mean the winner of Canada vs USA on Saturday will win Pool B.
The opening day was also important for Brazil. Thalia Costa became the country’s first player to reach the milestones of 100 tries on the World Rugby Sevens Circuit. She scored three to go from 98 career tries to 101. Brazil fell to losses against New Zealand and Japan in Pool A.
Pool B saw the North Americans unbeaten. Asia Hogan-Rochester, Olivia Apps and Carmen Izyk all scored two tries for Canada in an impressive 38-5 win over Great Britain, The outcome means Canada now has a six match winning streak against Great Britain in Women’s Rugby Sevens.
The 2024 Olympic Silver Medalists made it 2-0 with a 14-12 win over Fiji. The hard-fought victory came with Apps scoring on 12 minutes to complete a come-from-behind win for the Canadians.
Meanwhile, Ariana Ramsey impressed for the USA Women’s Eagles in 26-5 win over Great Britain. Nia Toliver also scored in the dominant win. Earlier in the day, Toliver scored twice and Ramsey once a 21-19 win over Fiji.
Hosts Australia impressed in Pool C. The Australians were 31-7 winners over China and 43-0 winners over Spain in their two matches. France also won big over Spain and kept China scoreless. This sets up the Day Two clash between Australia and France as the pool decider.
