Brazil secure home rugby test match against Romania

Brazil has secured a home rugby test match against Romania. As part of the July Internationals, Os Tupis will take-on the Stejarii in July. The date has not yet been finalized with July 12 being penciled in though it may be played on July 05.

The venue for the fixture is also yet to be finalized. Brazil are seeking to add a second home test match for July, against a different opponent, while Romania are in talks about also playing away against Uruguay and / or Chile.

The July Internationals are positioned before the final round of South American Rugby World Cup Qualifiers and after the European finals. The Stejarii  begin their campaign on January 31 against Germany in Bucharest. The fixture will be followed with Romania facing Belgium and Portugal in February and the play-off’s in March.

Europe’s qualifying series for Rugby World Cup 2027 will be the 2025 Rugby Europe Championship. Romania is one of eight competitors. Divided into two pools of four, the countries involved are Belgium, Georgia, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Switzerland. Four will qualify for the World Cup and one will enter repechage.

The July test match will be the second ever between Brazil and Romania in Brazil. The first meeting between Os Tupis and the Stejarii in Brazil was in 2019 with Romania winning by a single point in Jundiaí. The other test match between Brazil and Romania was won 56-5 by the Europeans in Bucharest in 2017.

Brazilian attention will immediately turn from Romania to Chile. Os Tupis will face Los Cóndores in home-and-away matches in July. Set for July 19 and July 26, Brazil will have home advantage for game one and face Chile away in game two. The winner will face either Uruguay or Paraguay in the South American final, the winner of which will qualify for Rugby World Cup 2027 as South America 1.

If Os Tupis were to win the South American Final then Brazil would qualify for the Men’s Rugby World Cup for the first time. It would be double celebration as Brazil will debut at the Women’s World Cup this year. If Chile defeat Brazil, on aggregate, then Brazil will play in the South American Bronze Final, likely against Paraguay. The winner will enter repechage for a shot at the final spot at Rugby World Cup 2027.
