Uruguay are facing a crisis at inside center. With one test match remaining for Los Teros on tour, the inside center options are at crisis point. Uruguayan Rugby Expert, Ignacio Chans has confirmed that Juan Manuel Alonso suffered a partial tear of the posterior ligament of his knee in the match against Japan.
The incident happened when Alonso successfully completed a jackal turn-over. Alonso will not be able to face Romania on Saturday, 23. He faces a recovery period of four months. This will see him miss the opening month of Super Rugby Americas 2025 for Peñarol.
Alonso started for Uruguay at inside enter against Japan in Chambéry and against Spain in Madrid. In July he played outside center with Tomás Inciarte starting against Scotland in Montevideo and regular captain, Andrés Vilaseca starting against France in Montevideo and against Argentina in Punta del Este.
Of the roster in Europe the leading contender to replace Alonso is arguably Joaquín Suárez. He had starts for Peñarol in the position during Super Rugby Americas 2024. Alternatively, elite Arcos Perez may move from outside center with winger Bautista Basso an option to wear the 13 shirt against Romania.
The loss of Alonso is the second starting back in as many matches. Fullback Baltazar Amaya was ruled out of facing Japan. Juan González earned his first test start win place of Amaya.
