New Look Uruguay Roster Named for November 2024 Internationals

Rodolfo Ambrosio has named a new look Uruguayan roster for the 2024 November Internationals. Los Teros will play three test matches in Europe in November. First, Uruguay face Spain on Saturday, November 09 at the Estadio Nacional Complutense in Madrid. Second, Uruguay travel to France to face Japan on November 16 at the Chambéry Savoie Stadium. Third, Uruguay travel to Bucharest to face Romania at the Stadionul National Arcul de Triumf in Bucharest on November 23.

LOS TEROS UNDER RODOLFO AMBROSIO

One Argentine replaced another as the man with the top job in Uruguayan rugby. Rodolfo Amborio took over from Esteban Meneses this year. Meneses guided Uruguay to unprecedented process. Wins against Fiji and Namibia at Rugby World Cups were recorded and an overall rise to be no 2 in the Americas.

Ambrosio took over a team on a high but one entering transition. Felipe Berchesi’s retirement has been followed by others making themselves unavailable. Meanwhile, Uruguay has secured its spot on the World Rugby Sevens circuit and Peñarol will be back for Super Rugby Americas 2025.

Los Teros are looking for their first win under Ambrosio. Uruguay had three tough matches at home in July. The South Americans competed in losses against France and Scotland in Montevideo but were beaten by a record scoreline by Argentina in Punta del Este.

URUGUAY – UNAVAILABLE

N8 Manuel Ardao, center Tomás Inciate and fly half Felipe Etcheverry all decided to sit out the tour well ahead of the November roster announcement. Planning for the Rugby World Cup 2027 qualifiers will thus be done without the inclusion of the Miami Sharks trio; their involvement is not certain.

Ambrosio’s roster is missing other players. Hooker German Kessler, and scrum-half Santiago Arata both play in France but will miss the tour. Arata is not yet fully-recovered from his mid-year injury. Kessler was not selected. Regular captain Andrés Vilaseca is out following surgery. The trio, as well as the aforementioned Miami Sharks players, all featured for Uruguay in July.

Vilaseca started against France and Argentina in July. He missed Uruguay’s third match of the July Internationals. This saw Manuel Leindekar captaining Los Teros against Scotland. While no captain was named as part of the roster announcement, Leindekar is now expected to lead his country against Spain, Japan and Romania. Santiago Civetta and Manuel Diana are other senior players who may be considered.

Veteran center / winger Nicolás Freitas and hooker Facundo Gattas will also not tour. This follows the retirement of second-rower Diego Magno. In short, Ambrosio is in charge of a new generation.

URUGUAY – UNCAPPED

Ambrosio has boldly selected u20 players for the tour. One name that will be familiar within certain circles is Arturo Ten Hoever. The 20-year-old represented Uruguay at junior levels but is from France. He is joined by Teritos teammates Pedro Hoblog and Ícaro Amarillo. U20’s winger Juan González is also on the roster

Of note is that Hoblog and Amarilla appear likely to start together as the halves on tour. Ícaro Amarillo is the only specialist fly half. His call-up follows injury to Juan Andrés Zuccarino and the loss of Felipe Berchesi and Felipe Etcheverry. Amarilla started regularly for Peñarol in Super Rugby Americas 2024. Joaquín Suárez is the other option. He played in a range of positions for Peñarol this year.

Another uncapped player selected is Federico De Los Santos. He also went through the junior system, playing for Uruguay u19’s in 2019. He takes the spot of Diego Magno to join second-rowers Felipe Aliaga, Ignacio Dotti, and Manuel Leindekar.

Former Peñarol player Francisco Suárez Folch is now on the Uruguayan roster. The uncapped flanker is from La Plata in Argentina. He joins familiar names Lucas Bianchi. Santiago Civetta and Carlos Deus. Manuel Ardao is the notably missing flanker.
