New faces on USA Women’s 7s roster for upcoming season

Women’s Eagles coach Emilie Bydwell has named a roster of 24 residency athletes who will be based in Chula Vista for the 2024-25 World Sevens Series. Included are 10 uncapped players, 8 of them new to the residency program. The squad marks the first in the Olympic cycle with the focus now firmly on building for the 2028 games that will be hosted in Los Angeles.

Eight members of the USA’s Bronze-winning squad have been selected, namely Kayla Canett, Nicole Heavirland, Kristi Kirshe, Sarah Levy, Alena Olsen, Ariana Ramsey, Alex Sedrick, and Sam Sullivan. Kirshe and Sedrick will re-join the squad in the new year along with Mata Hingano, who is currently with the USA squad at the WXV tournament in Vancouver.

Olympic captains Lauren Doyle and Naya Tapper have retired along with Steph Rovetti. Jaz Gray has also stepped away from the sport. Alev Kelter, Kris Thomas, Cheta Emba, and Joanne Fa’avesi will focus on XVs through to next year’s World Cup. Ilona Maher is also expected to challenge for a spot on the plane to England before re-joining the 7s squad ahead of the LA games.

Of the newcomers two recently debuted for the Eagles XVs side. Sariah Ibarra and Tessa Hann were both capped against Japan, with the latter in the traveling squad for the WXV. Nia Toliver has returned to international contention after a spell playing professionally in Japan.
