Colombia Break Records in Rugby World Cup Qualifier against Costa Rica

 

Records came tumbling down in Medellín, Colombia on Wednesday. Los Tucanes defeated Costa Rica by a record scoreline. The match was a Rugby World Cup 2027 Qualifier. The 136-0 victory sees Colombia through to the tournament final against Venezuela on Sunday while Costa Rica will face Peru.

Los Tucanes scored 20 tries against Los Bocaracas. N8 Cristian Rodallegas scored the first try. It came in the 3rd minute of play. The score was from a lineout to maul attack. Costa Rica were unable to defend it and the score was an early indication of the wave of tries that followed.

Fullback Alejandro Guisao scored an amazing eight tries for Colombia. Five of his tries came in the second-half. Jhojan Ortíz also contributed heavily to the scoring. The Colombian captain kicked 18/20 of his goals.

Luis Giraldo, Neider García, Juan Agudelo, Juan Romero, Andrés Tellez, Juan Alzate, and Santiago Huertas also entered the try zone. Of them, Giraldo scored four tries and García scored a hat-trick.

RECORDS BROKEN – COLOMBIA VS COSTA RICA

The 136-0 victory was Colombia’s biggest ever win. It overtakes the previous record in which Colombia defeated Ecuador 112-0 in Quito in 2014.

The result was also Costa Rica’s biggest ever defeat. It marks the first time that Costa Rica have conceded 100 or more points. The previous biggest loss suffered by Costa Rica was a 95-0 defeat against Brazil in 2006.

RWC 2027 QUALIFYING – SOUTH AMERICAN PICTURE

The winners of Wednesday’s two Rugby World Cup Qualifiers, Las Orquídeas and Los Tucanes, will meet for the title in Medellín on Sunday. Colombia’s 136-0 win came hours after Venezuela defeated Peru 27-15.

The final will also be played at the Estadio Cincuentenario in Medellín as will the Bronze Final between Peru and Costa Rica. It will be the second meeting between the teams this year; Costa Rica hosted and defeated Peru in July.

The winner of Colombia vs Venezuela will face the bottom team from the ongoing South American Triangular tournament which features Brazil, Chile and Paraguay. The winner of the play-off will join the two other triangular competitors and Uruguay in the Sudamericano 2025.

The Sudamericano 2025 Champion will qualify for Rugby World Cup 2027 as South America 1. The runner-up will enter repechage against the bottom-placed side from the 2025 Pacific Nations Cup. The third placed side will have a final shot at qualifying for Rugby World Cup 2027 via the Final-Place tournament.
