Chilean Hooker Makes Top 14 Debut

Chilean hooker Diego Escobar made his Top 14 debut for Racing 92. The 24-year-old electric hooker played 27 minutes for Racing 92 against Bordeaux on Saturday. The product of the COBS club in Santiago entered the match in the 53rd minute. His team were beaten 52-34 in the road match.

Escobar is one of two Cóndores in the Top 14. The other is World Cup teammate Iñaki Ayarza. The Cóndores starting fullback is yet to play in the season. Ayarza moved to Vannes this season from Pro D2 side Charente. Ayarza’s Top 14 debut is therefore forthcoming.

Ayarza has never played for Chile’s professional team, Selknam. Escobar joins Racing 92 from the Super Rugby Americas side. In doing so, Escobar is the second Chilean to play for Racing 92. The first is Sergio Valdés who played for the team when it was in the Pro D2. Valdés played for the then Racing Metro from 2005-2007.
