Chambéry Savoie Stadium will play host to two test matches in November. The venue has been allocated a double-header on November 16. Both matches feature countries from the Americas. The fixtures will be Uruguay vs Japan and USA vs Tonga.
The Chambéry Savoie Stadium has a seating capacity of 5,285. The city itself is the largest in the Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France’s southeast.
France has never played a home test match in Chambéry; indeed, the city will play host to test rugby for the first-time ever. The double-header is highly noteworthy; it includes the Rugby World Cup 2019 and 2031 hosts. Both Japan and the USA will play in Chambéry and do so against teams who won matches at Rugby World Cup 2023 in France. Uruguay defeated Namibia in Lyon and Tonga defeated Romania in Lille.
Dauphiné Libéré report that Japanese Head Coach Eddie Jones helped Chambéry secure the matches. Jones visited the Nationale club in June. He was impressed by the club’s facilities and the venue’s synthetic turf.
Also of note is that Stade Olympique de Chambéry Rugby recently recruited Tongan scrum-half Sonatane Takulua. The New Zealander is Tonga’s most capped player of all time with 57 caps. Moreover, Felipe Berchesi, who played for Uruguay at Rugby World Cups 2015, 2019 and 2023, played for Chambéry in 2014-2015. Berchesi is capped 49 times by Los Teros.
