MLR confirms College Draft date and selection order

Major League Rugby have confirmed a Wednesday, August 28, broadcast date for the 2024 College Draft. It’s the fifth edition of the off-season event that gives teams a chance to select from a pool of declared collegiate talent based in the USA or Canada. Seven selected players have since achieved full test honors.

Draft order was determined by final standing with playoff success taken account. Anthem will pick first after finishing last overall, with the champions New England given the last pick in each round. As in previous years there will be three rounds in the draft, for a total of 36 selections.

Nine picks were affected by trades. The latest confirmed saw LA’s first slot, the 2nd-overall pick in the draft, sent to Anthem along with salary cap considerations in return for an extra international slot in the 2025 campaign. Anthem also dealt an international slot to Utah in exchange for salary cap considerations, but it had no effect on the draft.

Anthem now have the most number of selections with five including the top two in the draft. New England, DC, and Seattle each have four picks, with three going to Utah, San Diego, LA, and Chicago. Two picks currently belong to each of Miami, NOLA, and Houston, while Dallas have just one selection with the No9 overall pick.

The August 28 Draft Show will be streamed on RugbyPass at 7pm Eastern (4pm Pacific). A documentary show chronicling the MLR Rising prospects game will air at the same time on Wednesday, August 21.
