Brazil XV Humbled and Pummeled by Vancouver Highlanders

Brazil were humbled and pummeled in Canada on Saturday. The Brazilian next-of-XV, playing under the name Os Tupis XV, were humiliated at Klahanie Park in West Vancouver. The Vancouver Highlands were 77-7 winners in what was a reality check for Tupis XV Head Coach and Brazilian Technical Director, Josh Reeves.

The purpose of the match from Brazil’s perspective was to expand the player base by giving fringe players the opportunity. Os Tupis XV fielded a team with notable names including Cobras players and capped Brazilians. For instance, Levy Marinho, Leonardo de Souza, Kauã Guimarães, Maiki Lemes, Pedro Aparecido, Sérgio Luna, Victor Silva, and Robson Morais all started.

Former Canadian international, and Rugby World Cup 2019 player, Guiseppe du Toit scored the second try of the match. The Vancouver Highlanders scored again before Os Tupis XV scored their only points of the match. Winger Sergio Luna’s try made it 21-7. Luna’s try was from an interception. The Vancouver Highlanders hit-back for a 28-7 half-time lead.

In total, the Canadian side ran in eleven tries compared to one scored by the Brazilians. Fullback Mike Molony kicked eleven from eleven conversions while winger Nico Leonard and center Melani Nanai also both impressed in scoring hat-tricks.
